Taking yield as a basis the five best varieties for conditions as they exist at the Station farm are: Fulcaster, China, Royal Red Clawson, Reliable, and Dawson's Golden Chaff. 4. The yield of wheat in Pennsylvania is too low. Good varieties and attention to the management of the soil and the culture of the crop will greatly aid in securing more wheat and greater profits. 5. No specific date for sowing wheat can be given. Too early or too late sewing should not be practiced. There is a rather long intermediate season during which wheat may be sown with likelihood of good results. For the past several years the Pennsylvania Experiment Station has been conducting tests with various varieties of winter wheat. In this time many varieties have been tested, some of which have proved of little value, while others have been shown to have many desirable characters. The tests have shown that some new varieties which are lauded very highly by their introducers often have no redeeming qualities, while others are often very valuable, and that many of the old and well known varieties possess characters of much merit.
